Create your own unique symbols! A Free Batik Workshop for Young Creators

Friday 14 February, 2025

TBC

Workshops led by local production artist David Adeyemi, a selected artist in A+E Lab’s ART + TECH Artist-in-Residence programme.

Workshop Description
This workshop celebrates young people of colour, focusing on the geographical and historical significance of batik—a traditional textile art form that uses wax-resist dyeing techniques to create intricate patterns and motifs. Originating from regions such as Indonesia, West Africa, and India, batik has long been a means of storytelling, cultural expression, and identity.

Participants will explore the rich heritage of batik and be encouraged to create their own unique symbols and designs, reflecting personal narratives and cultural connections. This workshop will take place prior to David’s residency, allowing participants' designs to be stitched into the final installation—their voices and creativity becoming a part of the artwork itself.

Workshop leader: David Adeyemi
David is a production artist and creative technologist based in Sittingbourne, specialising in video art and animated installation projects. With a strong background in VFX and production pipelines, David’s work combines technical skill with creative exploration. Their art delves into the absurdities of capitalism, unpacking these themes through fantastical, dreamlike imagery that captivates and challenges the viewer. In their recent project 'Midas' ATM Dreams', David reimagines the Greek myth of King Midas, utilising green screen production techniques to transpose the ancient story into the contemporary setting of a council estate.

Alongside their creative work, David has led workshops with the Royal Academy and hosted group tours of exhibitions at the Autograph Gallery, sharing their expertise and engaging with a range of audiences. Currently, David is pursuing studies in Virtual Production for Real-time Filmmaking at the National Film and Television School (NFTS), while also working freelance as an events technician. Assisting with the batik and choreography elements of this project is creative collaborator Jay Ee, a dancer, visual artist, and educator specialising in batik art and movement-based practices.
