Workshop Description
A free 1-hour workshop where school groups get an early look at a new augmented reality work while it's still being made, led by our team at AΦE.
Students step inside our creative process and see how a story is built in AR from the ground up. We share an early prototype of Peter and The Wolf: A Solarpunk Reimagining, so students can experience the work first-hand and understand what actually goes into making it, from the idea to the technology behind it. We will also ask them questions afterwards: did they understand the story, what did they think of the character design, what was their favourite moment. Because their feedback is a crucial part of our R&D process in shaping the work. After the demo, they also get to colour their own version of the character and imagine what happens in the scenes still to come, so they become part of how the story grows.
The session brings together art, storytelling and technology, and connects naturally to STEM learning. No laptops or devices needed from the students, just curiosity.
What students gain:
• Direct hands-on experience with AR technology
• A look behind the scenes at how a new AR work is actually made
• Understanding of creative applications beyond entertainment
• A chance to shape the story through their own drawings
Length: 60 minutes
Age: 5+ years old
Time: To be agreed on a first-come, first-served basis
Capacity: 20 people per session
Location: At your school classroom
Requirement: A projector or screen where we can display from our laptop. Painting tools such as paper, acrylic paint and coloured pencils.
About Peter and the Wolf: A Solarpunk Reimagining:
An interactive AR experience for all ages, inspired by Prokofiev's classic tale for children.
Peter and the Wolf: A Solarpunk Reimagining is set in Solha, a bio-integrated city, in 2087. It follows the story through motion-captured dance and 3D animation, viewed on AR glasses or iPads. This retelling keeps the tale's values of courage, friendship and environmental responsibility, and brings immersive storytelling to children, young people and neurodivergent audiences in accessible ways. A work for all ages, reviving old memories and making new ones.
“Want to have more!" "Walking into the animation was the favourite moment"
Sharing audience age 6-8
Workshop leader: AΦE
AΦE is a dance company that makes art where the human body meets virtual and augmented reality. Founded in 2016 and led by co-directors Esteban Lecoq and Aoi Nakamura, they were the UK's first dance company to tour VR and AR shows internationally, reaching 21 countries and over 90 venues. They've worked with big names in technology such as NVIDIA, Scan Computers and Framestore, and with celebrated stages including Royal Ballet and Opera, Sadler's Wells and Sydney Festival.
In 2022 they opened A+E Lab, their home at Historic Dockyard Chatham, where art and technology meet and where anyone can get hands-on with digital tools. Their mission is to open up culture and technology to everyone, and to make Medway a place where creative and digital ideas grow.
