IMMERSE INTO GIGANTIC INSTALLATION MADE BY TAPE

18 March - 3 June 2023 (viewing only)
3 Slip, The Historic Dockyard Chatham, Main Gate Rd, Chatham ME4 4TZ

For more than a decade Numen/For Use have been exploring cocoon-like tape structures based on self-forming, emergent construction processes, similar to those taking place in the natural world. These structures are inherently biomorphic, formally both clean and messy, easily switching between systems of lines and nets to form two-dimensional skins, spatial organs and biomorphic architecture.

In partnership with The Historic Dockyard Chatham and supported by Arts Council England, Institute of Cultural and Creative Industries (iCCi) – University of Kent, Blackout and Brandon Hire Station, Numen/For Use has transformed the immense No.3 Covered Slip at The Historic Dockyard Chatham, the largest wide span timber structure in Europe when it was built in 1838.

Tape has transformed one of the most iconic and important architecture in Chatham, Medway. Tape will connect old and new, forming one organic architecture.

Beyond its life at the Historic Dockyard, the components of Tape will be re-used in several creative artwork projects across Medway.

About Numen/For Use

Numen/For Use is an award winning collective working in the fields of conceptual art, scenography, industrial and spatial design. The group first formed in 1998. as a collaborative effort of industrial designers Sven Jonke, Christoph Katzler and Nikola Radeljković under the banner For Use. In 1999. they establish Numen as a collective identity covering all projects actualised outside the sphere of industrial design. The group's early enterprises are characterised by experiments with impersonal design and radical formal reduction, deeply rooted in the tradition of high modernism and mainly applied to various synergetic total-design projects in Croatia. From 2004 onwards, after setting up a large scale site-specific project for the production of “Inferno” in the National Centre for Drama in Madrid, Numen/ For Use became intensely involved with scenography. Further realisations in theatres across Europe ensue. Since 2008, the collective has turned its focus towards configuring objects and concepts without a predefined function, an activity resulting in the more hybrid and experimental works such as the N-Light series and Tape Installation. Parallel to these publicly exposed ventures, the group wins several international awards for their accomplishments in the field of industrial and set design.

About ALT*MED

ALT*MED is A+E Lab’s presentation platform, “ALT*Program” curated by AΦE to invite world-class artists to offer a new cultural experience into a town.

First edition ALT*ASH, an outdoor interactive digital art programme that took place during lockdown in April 2021 on Ashford’s High Street, engaging 29,000 live audience members and 139,000 online.

This year we present a one-month long installation by an award-winning architectural collective Numen/For Use at the heart of Medway. ALT is coming from the Alt key. Alt on a computer keyboard is used to change (alternate) the function of other keys. This name came from A+E Lab’s wish to work with what already exists in Medway (MED) and bring inspiration, excitement and playfulness into the historical building through creativity.

Tape will run alongside the “Monsters of the Deep” exhibition at The Historic Dockyard Chatham, creating an attractive artistic presence for the visitors of the Museum and local community.
